In 1974, when A. H. HIRSCH first imagined his now legendary bourbon, he set the gold standard for thoughtful American whiskey. Today, HIRSCH continues to pursue whiskey as an explorer might consider uncharted territory. They believe the world is full of possibility, there's always room for discovery, and craft is best balanced with experimentation. With obsessively discerning selections, HIRSCH continues to blaze trails for the adventurous. This unique expression is a double-oak Straight Kentucky Bourbon Whiskey blend of 2 bourbons. Once the whiskeys were blended, they were finished in a char #1 used oak.
This 95|5 blend has the highest age of the 8-year mash bill, meaning classic bourbon notes are expected to dominate. With the 3-Year mash bill bringing out nice stone fruit, cooked berry nuance. In total there are three blends with the same mash bill. They are 85|15, 92|8, and 95|5.
From Lee Diaz, Topflight Series Panel Member:
With only 30 HIRSCH Double Oak Single Barrels released and selected nationwide last year, this was an apparent selection that we had to make. The double-oaked bourbon takes a blend of two different bourbons into a second new American oak barrel. This allows the whiskey to retain the "bourbon" title while enabling the HIRSCH team to develop incredibly tasty, unique blends. This specific blend brings together 95% of an 8-year, 7-month bourbon with a 72% corn, 13% rye, and 15% malted barley mash bill in with 5% of a 3-year, 7-month bourbon with a 72-18-8 mash bill. The result is a balanced bourbon that is bright on the nose and deep in flavor throughout the finish. On the nose, I discovered candied cherries, cinnamon, and tobacco. This pour is rich with maple syrup, marshmallow and raisin, and toasted grains from the first sip. This leads into a finish with classic bourbon notes of dark chocolate, caramel, stone fruit, herbal tea, and subtle leather. This release expresses a mastery of selection, blending, and finishing that is uniquely HIRSCH.
